December 2009

It was the middle of December and I wasn’t feeling right. The thought was in the back of my mind. “Could I be pregnant?” We have tried for 6 years and nothing. When we finally gave up on trying I decided to go on birth control to regulate my body. I have only been off the pill for 30 days. As I arrived at work I wasn’t feeling well. I did my morning work when a friend asked me if I was okay. I asked her if she was going to the store and when she said yes. I handed her the money to get my pregnancy test. As soon as she returned I went to the restroom and five minutes later there it was. A very faint blue line confirming that I was. Later that evening I arrived home and I told my fiancé the good news.
I woke up the following morning and decided to take the second test. Within 3 minutes there was a nice and bright positive sign on my test. I left it sitting on the counter and walked away to eat my breakfast. When my fiancé woke up I told him to look on the bathroom counter. He came back out and gave me a big hug and kiss. We were having a baby. On my way to work I called to make my first appointment with my midwife. I was excited but also in disbelieve. I would finally get my baby.
That day I returned home from work in a pretty good mood. I was lying on the couch watching TV when I suddenly felt terrible cramping. I ran to the restroom and as I had feared there was blood. I thought that I miscarried. My fiancé drove me to the emergency room to see what was going on. I was taken into the back and the doctor came in to let me know the course of action. First they were going to do a pregnancy test and depending on those results more tests would be ordered. I did my urine test and about 20 minutes later the doctor returned to tell me that it was positive. The next step would be a blood test to check my HCG levels and an ultrasound to see what was going on. A nurse came into my room and after a few needle pricks she drew the blood. A few minutes later I was taken to ultrasound. The ultrasound technician was quiet the entire time. I started getting very nervous. After 30 minutes I was taken back to my room and I was told that the doctor would be in to speak to me. The doctor came into the room within an hour and he sat down. The first thing through my mind was “oh no, he’s sitting down. This can’t be good”. He told me that according to my blood test that I am pregnant but the levels were very low. He also added that the ultrasound confirmed the pregnancy but that it did not look good. I was devastated.
A week later, about 5 days from Christmas, I suddenly had terrible cramping again and severe bleeding. We returned to the emergency room. They once again did blood testing and an ultrasound. This really nice and friendly doctor came in and told me that my HCG levels are still low but they are higher. The bleeding and cramping was caused by my baby had attached itself to my uterus. She also told us that our baby was conceived December 5th.  This added up correctly considering that November 26th was my birthday so the dates fit. I was told to go home and to take it easy.
We returned home and after an exhausting day I crawled into bed. The doctor wrote me out of work for 5 days to get plenty of rest. On the fourth day of my rest I had to return for more blood work to see how my levels were looking. The next day my midwife calls to me tell me that my levels are improving but that I am at risk of miscarrying because of how low they are. I was to do another blood test within a week and to take it very easy at work. The days grew longer as I had to wait for more testing. All I wanted was for this baby to be okay and to live a happy life.
